Sisterhood of the Traveling ARC: The Women in the Walls by Amy Lukavics

Elizabeth from Book YAbber, Marci from The Plot Bunny and I are showcasing Amy Lukavics for the second post for Sisterhood of the Traveling ARC! Because the three of us love reading ARCs, we decided on sharing our ARCs with one another, not only to allow each of us to read a new title, but to promote how obtaining an ARC is not about trying to hoard an ARC for yourself.

ARCs are meant for promotional reasons. We figured that if we can share one ARC amongst the three of us, it means that the publisher is getting three times as much promotion from one ARC. Each of us will be doing a post on the title we decide to share.

Elizabeth, Marci and I have read Lukavics's first book, Daughters Unto Devils and it was just the right amount of creepiness. Her sophomore book, The Women in the Walls, is actually even better than her debut! The Women in the Walls have been on our list since we heard about it at the Halloween Teen Scream event in Salem, MA last October.

Title: The Women in the Walls
Author: Amy Lukavics
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication date: September 27, 2016
Pages: 304
Source/format: ARC from Elizabeth from Book YAbber

Rating: ☆☆☆ 1/2

Synopsis (from goodreads.com):

Lucy Acosta's mother died when she was three. Growing up in a Victorian mansion in the middle of the woods with her cold, distant father, she explored the dark hallways of the estate with her cousin, Margaret. They're inseparable—a family.

When her aunt Penelope, the only mother she's ever known, tragically disappears while walking in the woods surrounding their estate, Lucy finds herself devastated and alone. Margaret has been spending a lot of time in the attic. She claims she can hear her dead mother's voice whispering from the walls. Emotionally shut out by her father, Lucy watches helplessly as her cousin's sanity slowly unravels. But when she begins hearing voices herself, Lucy finds herself confronting an ancient and deadly legacy that has marked the women in her family for generations.

"Something isn't right in this house."

M Y  T H O U G H T S

From the first page, I was hooked. The Women in the Walls devours you whole. From the beginning of the novel, Lucy Acosta knew something is wrong with the house she lives in. With all these random deaths and disappearances, she is suspicious about the house.

Amy Lukavics's sophomore novel blew me out of the water. I read her debut, Daughter Unto Devils last year and I couldn't wait to read The Women in the Walls. And boy, does it not disappoint. Lukavics writes description and dialogue well. The attic, the sinister voices in the walls and the creepy cemetery build up the eeriness. There are some instances of grotesque things in the book but it doesn't hinder the plot.

However, I was not a big fan of the lack of character development with some characters such as Margaret and Lucy's father. I did not see the twist at the end of the book. The ending is crazy but it's perfect!

Lukavics created a masterpiece. The Women in the Walls is equally intriguing, unsettling and chilling. This is a horror novel you want to pick up for sure!

Top Books with a New England Setting

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's Top Ten Tuesday asks bloggers to post about their top ten books with X setting. I chose the top books with a New England setting. The books are in no particular order.

1. Lost in Thought by Cara Bertrand - Northwest MA

This is one of my favorite paranormal boarding house school books. It's a must read if you like books such as Hex Hall and The Vampire Academy.

2. How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather - Salem, MA

Is a new favorite. I love everything Salem so this is definitely a book to pick up if you like Salem book too. I might be biased since I live right next to Salem. This book is a hybrid of Hocus Pocus and Mean Girls.

3. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott - Concord, MA

This book is a classic. Although it's not my favorite classic, I always think it's awesome that I live so close to the Orchard House.

4. Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey - Boston, MA

This classic picture book is one of my favorites. You can't miss the duckling statues in the Boston Commons! Also, who doesn't like ducks?

5. Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern - Boston, MA

If you're looking for a cute chick lit book, definitely check this one out. Relocating from Ireland to the Boston, Alex and Rosie embark on new adventures. I still need to check out the film adaptation for this novel.

6. Carrie by Stephen King - Chamberlain, Maine (Fictional)

One of the first adult horror novels that I read, I actually totally forgot this one is located in Maine.

7. All Souls: A Family Story from Southie by Michael Patrick MacDonald - South Boston, MA

This memoir is one that I read back in high school and was able to meet the author. This memoir is raw and can be difficult to read but it's an important read.

8. A Separate Peace by John Knowles - New Hampshire

There is no doubt that I am in love with boarding houses and this novel is one of my favorites when I read it back in high school. If you're looking for a coming-of-age story around the Wordl War II, pick this one up.

9. Salt & Storm by Kendall Kulper - Prince Island, New England (Fictional)

Want to read a book about a whaling town and witches? Definitely check out this historical fantasy novel. A little bit of romance and magic will entangle you!

10. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson - New Hampshire

This contemporary novel is an important one that deals with eating disorders. Anderson writes about real teen issues without the sugarcoating. It's important for everyone to know the truth. However, those who had a eating disorder should be careful reading this novel.

11. The Baby-Sitters Club - Stoneybrook, Connecticut (Fictional)

The Baby-Sitters Club books is one of my favorite series when I was a child. I loved reading these chapter books and it's cool how the series is located in New England even though it's a fictional town.

12. The Witch of Blackbird Pond - Wethersfield, Connecticut

This is a book I read back in school and it was one of my favorites in middle school. Although this is very similar to the setting of the Witch Trials in Salem, it's nice to read about other towns besides Salem.

What are your favorite books with a New England setting? Do we share any of the same favorite books located in the New England area?

2. Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is quirky and walks to the beat of her own drum. It's okay to be a little bit different. I can identify with Luna immensely. Also, she is my favorite Harry Potter characters.

4. Sydney Sage from the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead loves to learn. Education is super important to her and she loves anything logical and anything fact based. She is intelligent, organized and very responsible. Although she was closed-minded in the Vampire Academy series, she becomes more open-minded in the Bloodlines series. Her journey through 6+ books is astonishing.

5. Kestrel Trajan from The Winner's Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski is a brilliant strategist and a talented pianist. She fights people with her mind and with her words. She is very aware of her surroundings and what is moral and what isn't. Kestrel is also resourceful.

The Marauders: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Midnight Release Recap

The Marauders is a feature where Book Yabber, Marci from The Plot Bunny and I will showcase our bookish adventures around New England. Whether it is a bookstore or a library, we wanted to discover new places to share with the bookish community. We each took an Animagus form. Can you guess who is who and what animal is each person's Animagus?

I was beyond excited to meet up with Elizabeth and Marci for one of the most epic days of the year! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was released on July 31st which is also Harry Potter's and J.K. Rowling's birthday!!! I met up with Elizabeth at Harvard Square (aka Harvard Square) and we headed to John Harvard's for dinner. Rachel, Anna and Marci met up with us shortly after. I ordered a Lady Grey martini in honor of the Grey Lady, which by the way, is perfect for this Ravenclaw. For dinner I had a delicious plate of Butternut Squash Ravioli.

Rachel and Anna parted ways with Elizabeth, Marci and I. Despite it being almost 8:00 p.m., the ladies and I ventured toward Harvard Book Store, which is my favorite indie book store. The line for the tickets didn't start yet but we wanted to be some of the very first people to obtain the book at midnight. Tickets were being handed out at 10:00 p.m. in the order people stand in line. We ended up being in the front of the line and boy was it worth it.

Elizabeth and I needed to use the restroom so we walked toward Starbucks to order some Butterbeer Frappucinos. I ended up getting Luna on my cup and had Bellatrix written for Marci. When Elizabeth and I walked back to Harvard Book Store, the line was getting pretty lengthy. I am so glad we got there earlier and Marci held the spot for us.

After a couple of hours of waiting in line for the tickets, we were notified that the we couldn't get our tickets until the list for the pre-orders was done printing. We didn't end up going into the store into around 10:30. However, it was definitely worth the wait. We got our photo taken at the photo booth and worked on a Harry Potter trivia sheet that we can fill out to enter to win a $50.00 gift card to Harvard Book Store. There were also house tables serving cream soda, pretzels and other treats.

Elizabeth, Marci and I counted all the snitches around the store and we were in the queue at 11:45 p.m. to wait in line for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. OMG was that wait torturous! My heart was pounding so fast when there was only 6 minutes left before the boxes were opened. I was able to capture many photos and video of the epic midnight release party!

Elizabeth, Marci and I took so many selfies all night long. My favorite has to be the one with us holding Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in our hands! We got the book around 12:01 and were out of the store super quick before heading home. This was Elizabeth's first midnight release party and I am so happy that she had a blast. In fact, we all had a fantastic time!

What did you do for the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? Did you attend a midnight release party or throw a Harry Potter with friends? Did you marathon the movies or books?

If you want to follow The Marauders on social media, please check out the hashtag, #TheMarauders3, for pictures about our bookish adventures. We solemnly swear we are up to no good. Mischief Managed.

Sisterhood of the Traveling ARC: Stalking Jack the Ripper

Elizabeth from Book YAbber, Marci from The Plot Bunny and I are finally announcing our latest feature called the Sisterhood of the Traveling ARC!

For our first ARC, we decided on Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco. Not only do all three of us love the book but we are excited that Maniscalco is a debut author.

Spreading the word about a debut author is so important. Not only are most readers not aware of debut authors but sales is super important for upcoming books. If the debut book doesn't sell well, the author's chances of selling another book for publication is lower. Help support authors by spreading the word. Brownie points goes to readers who pre-order books or purchase finished copies.

Title: Stalking Jack the Ripper
Author: Kerri Maniscalco
Publisher: Jimmy Patterson
Publication date: September 20, 2016
Pages: 336
Source/format: ARC from Marci from The Plot Bunny

Rating: ☆☆☆

Synopsis (from goodreads.com):

Presented by James Patterson's new children's imprint, this deliciously creepy horror novel has a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion...

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

M Y  T H O U G H T S

Stalking Jack the Ripper fuses together gore and a mystery from the late 19th century Victorian era. Kerri Maniscalco does a fabulous job creating a compelling, atmospheric novel with a strong unconventional female lead. Instead of being molded into a docile young lady trying to attract a man to be betrothed to, Audrey Rose Wadsworth prefers to dabble with forensic sciences and cadavers. Her skills with embroidery transfers to the stitching of human flesh. Although she loves the finer delicate things in life, her passion is learn everything there is within Uncle Jonathan's laboratory. Audrey is the quintessential renaissance lady!

Audrey Rose is lucky to have someone in her life that will allow her to gain knowledge about forensic medicine. Not only does Uncle Jonathan allow her to be an apprentice but he encourages her to attend his surgical classes, dressed up as a male of course. Not many people in her society would approve of such an interest. Even her brother, Nathaniel, and her acquaintance, Thomas Cresswell, help her conceal her secret outings.

While the rest of London's East End is paranoid about the recent attacks, Audrey Rose is intrigued about the serial killer investigations. She spends more time with Uncle's other apprentice, Thomas, while they try to piece together clues. I found the banter between Audrey Rose and Thomas amusing. Maniscalco's witty dialogue is on point! I devoured Stalking Jack the Ripper! The fusion of historical fiction and mystery thriller makes it the perfect read for curious readers. It will keep you guessing about who Jack really is.

Stalking Jack the Ripper is a suspenseful debut and will keep you guessing throughout the whole novel about who the murderer is. Join Audrey Rose as she unfolds the mystery. Stalking Jack the Ripper is the first book in the trilogy and Maniscalco will lure you in with the very first page. It's macabre at its finest! Add this gripping historical fiction thriller to your TBR list!

Ten Books I Will Buy With a Fully Loaded Gift Card

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's Top Ten Tuesday asks bloggers share their top ten books we'd buy right this second if someone handed us a fully loaded gift card. The following books are in no particular order.

1.  The Fireman by Joe Hill is a book that Elizabeth from Book YAbber recommended and it definitely sounds intriguing. Because of it's massive size in length, I have been holding off to pick it up. If you enjoy horror and thrillers, definitely check out this book!

2. The Museum of Heartbreak by Meg Leder is a book both Emma from Miss Print and Marci from The Plot Bunny recommended to me. The main character curates her own mini-museum to deal with all the heartbreaks which include love, friendship and growing up.

3. Past Perfect by Leila Sales is a book that has been on by TBR list every since I read This Song Will Save Your Life. I heard good things about Past Perfect. The main character is a ice cream connoisseur and works at Essex Historical Colonial Village. How awesome is that? I am a huge ice cream lover and have worked in an ice cream shop for 7 years. I also love visiting places with reenactments such as Plimoth Plantation and Salem.

4. The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp is a book I want to read before I see the film adaptation. Not only has a few of my friends been raving about the book but I know a lot of people enjoyed the movie as well. I want to see what the hype is about.

5. Tangled Thoughts by Cara Bertrand is the third book in the Sententia series. If you like paranormal boarding school books, definitely check out this series! I enjoyed reading the first two installments and I cannot wait to pick this one up.

6. Circle of Jinn by Lori Goldstein is the sequel to Becoming Jinn. I can't wait to find out more about Azra and about her heritage. Her strong sisterly bonds is something I hope to see evolve into something more.

7. The Love and Lemons Cookbook: An Apple-to-Zucchini Celebration of Impromptu Cooking by Jeanine Donofrio is a cook book that I have had my eye on for awhile. Not only are the recipes super healthy but the formatting of the book is simple and easy on the eyes.

8. Harry Potter: The Character Vault by Jody Revenson is a book that has been on my wish list for some time and for good reason. I mean it's about Harry Potter! Of course I want it.

9. Harry Potter: The Artifact Vault by Jody Revenson is also on my wish list. I recently attended Leviosa, a Harry Potter and YA lit con, and attended a panel about Material Culture in the Wizarding World. This book would definitely be a good read.

10. Ravenous by MarcyKate Connolly is a companion novel to Monstrous. I enjoyed Monstrous and I am very excited to read about the Hansel and Gretel retelling.

What books would you purchase if you had a preloaded gift card? Do you own any of the books above? Let me know in the comments below.
